SPP Development Ukraine at the European-Ukrainian Energy Day in Berlin: attracting investment in Ukrainian energy projects

SPP Development Ukraine at the European-Ukrainian Energy Day in Berlin: attracting investment in Ukrainian energy projects

On 8 October, the 17th European-Ukrainian Energy Day took place in Berlin, bringing together representatives of the energy sector, international financial institutions, and investors. The discussions focused on attracting investment into Ukraine’s energy sector, managing war-related risks, and shaping the future architecture of Ukraine’s energy system.

SPP Development Ukraine joined the international dialogue on the development of Ukraine’s energy sector. Olena Turevych, Head of External Relations at SPP Development Ukraine, participated in a panel discussion addressing financing conditions for energy projects and approaches to strengthening the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system.

What does it take to attract investment in Ukraine’s energy sector?

One of the key topics of the discussion was financing energy projects amid Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. What does it take for an energy project to attract international investors?

From SPP Development Ukraine’s perspective, the key factors are alignment with the actual needs of Ukraine’s energy system, a sound financial model, and a clear understanding of project-related risks.

Foreign capital can be deployed in Ukraine even during wartime. However, securing financing requires thorough project preparation, independent due diligence, and transparent risk-sharing mechanisms among project stakeholders.

These considerations are particularly relevant to developing new power generation capacity and attracting international partners to energy projects in Ukraine.

Decentralization as the foundation of Ukraine’s energy system resilience

Another important topic of discussion was the future architecture of Ukraine’s energy system. During the discussion, SPP Development Ukraine emphasized that strengthening the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system requires more than simply adding new generation capacity. It also depends on expanding decentralized power generation, deploying flexible energy solutions, and bringing electricity generation closer to where it is consumed.

Combining these approaches is essential to building an energy system that can adapt to emerging challenges and ensure a more reliable electricity supply in the face of wartime threats.

We thank the European-Ukrainian Energy Agency (EUEA) and Green Deal Ukraine for organizing the event and providing an opportunity for meaningful dialogue.

Special thanks also go to the European Commission, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the entire international partner community for their consistent support of Ukraine’s energy sector over the past several years.
